Comprehensive Income reporting - The attitude of producers and users of financial statements
(2011-06-08) Andersson, Josefin; Karlsson, Nicklas; University of Gothenburg/Department of Business Administration; Göteborgs universitet/Företagsekonomiska institutionen
Background: On 1 January 2009 amendments to IAS 1 concerning the presentation of comprehensive income came into force. The amendments were one outcome of the IASB’s performance reporting project with the purpose of enhancing the usefulness of information presented in the income statement. It is now required to present certain items, referred to as other comprehensive income, in a statement of comprehensive income which can be either a single statement or two statements where net income and other comprehensive income are presented separately. Research objectives: We examine whether the presentation of other comprehensive income provides useful information. Additionally, we examine whether the one or two statement approach to comprehensive income reporting is more appropriate in providing investors with information. These issues will be examined from the perspective of producers and users of financial statements respectively. Research design: The attitude of producers to comprehensive income reporting is examined by means of an annual report study, a study of comment letters and an interview with one producer whereas the attitude of users is examined by means of a statistical association study. Limitations: The annual report study examines the time period 2008–2009 and is restricted to the Swedish market whereas the statistical study examines the time period 2006–2010 and focuses on European markets. Throughout the paper, ‘users’ refers to investors. Empirical findings: Our results suggest that producers do not consider other comprehensive income relevant in evaluating firm performance but that users take it into account, although they regard net income as more value relevant. Accordingly, the IASB’s requirements regarding comprehensive income reporting can be considered legitimate in terms of enhancing the usefulness of information available to investors. Our results indicate that other comprehensive income contains useful information for evaluating firm performance, but that net income is much more value relevant. Hence, the two statement approach to comprehensive income reporting may seem appropriate. Further research: Further research could clarify differences in attitudes to other comprehensive income between producers and users. Additionally, it could examine whether the importance of other comprehensive income has increased over time after the amendments to IAS 1 came into force. It could also control for parameters not taken into account in this paper that might impact the perceived relevance of other comprehensive income.

Gränsöverskridande uttryck i textilkonst - En jämförande studie av två feministiska textilkonstnärer från skilda tidsperioder
(2015-01-02) Andersson, Josefin; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaper
Similar to work of the feminist movement in the seventies, you nowadays can see an increased level of textile art expressions with feminist standpoints. In this thesis I compare two textile artists from each time period. These are Maria Adlercreutz with her composition I hennes ögon bevaras folkets ljus from 1972, and Lisa Anne Auerbach’s exhibition Chicken Strikken from 2012. The aim is to put the two artists in a contemporary context and explore their feministic approaches in the textile field. With theories related to globalization, gender and feministic art history it was clear that tradition and associations to the textile material played an important part. By breaking preconceptions they renegotiates gender roles, revalue textile and challenge the view of art. Adlercreutz claims the art scene by political statements in wovens, while Auerbach deals with a functional theme by conceptualizing sweaters with an aesthetic of DIY ideas.

Immigration och andelen förvärvsarbetande - En studie i hur immigration påverkar andelen förvärvsarbetande i Sverige
(2017-02-10) Andersson, Josefin; Thordenberg, Erik; University of Gothenburg/Department of Economics; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för nationalekonomi med statistik

KARTLÄGGNING AV FYRA BEHANDLINGSMETODER FÖR TINNITUS; MINDFULNESS, AKUPUNKTUR, INTAG AV KOSTTILLSKOTT OCH YOGA En beskrivande litteraturstudie
(2018-09-19) Engström, Sofia; Andersson, Josefin; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för neurovetenskap och fysiologi; Gothenburg University/Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology

(2013-10-10) Andersson, Josefin; University of Gothenburg / Department of sociology and work science; Göteborgs universitet / / Institutionen för sociologi och arbetsvetenskap
The concept competence is considered to be difficult to define. Therefore, it may be problematic to define competence in business and to evaluate the level of skills of employees (Thomsen, 2010). In this study the aim has been to identify key competencies for employees working as purchasers for Skanska Nordic Procurement Unit (NPU). These key competencies will afterwards help Skanska NPU to evaluate purchasers’ level of competence. The theoretical framework of the study consists of three different parts. The first part is an explanation of what the concept competence stands for. The second part is a description of how companies can conduct a competence mapping process. Finally, a description of different levels of action is presented. The research method for the study was to use qualitative semi- structured interviews. The interviews were conducted with six purchasing managers, who all work at Skanska NPU. In this study 17 key competencies were identified and categorized into four different paragraphs to enable a deeper understanding. What was prominent in the study was that most of the identified key competencies were categorized into the paragraph professional technical expertise, which are techniques, methods, knowledge’s and rules that employees need for a specific profession. Some of the competencies were categorized into more than one paragraph, which clearly shows that the paragraphs are closely interrelated. However, it is evident to remember that all paragraphs are equally important and that they together construct functional competence, which is a persons functional ability in a specific work situation. It was also noted that the respondents’ answers varied significantly. Two potential explanations for that, is that there are different roles of purchasers at Skanska NPU and that the respondents may have different views on the concept competence.

Motivational Drivers for Early Adoption of Management Accounting Innovations among Incompatible Organisations: When Organisational Culture and Innovation Characteristics Do Not Fit
(2018-07-02) Andersson, Josefin; Larsson, Hannes; University of Gothenburg/Graduate School; Göteborgs universitet/Graduate School
Previous research has not been able to uncover what motivates incompatible organisations to adopt a management accounting innovation (MAI) in the early stages. In this study we investigate early adoption and the motivational drivers among four organisations that, by not having the same values and beliefs as those inherent in the MAI, are considered to be incompatible. Drawing on existing theory, we develop a conceptual framework that illustrates the process these incompatible early adopters go through when deciding to adopt the MAI. It is examined with a qualitative approach, to give a more detailed perspective of the process, through conducting interviews with individuals involved in the decision. The study identifies two motivational drivers that explain this incompatible adoption in the early stage of the diffusion. Firstly, the existence of a superordinate objective in the organisation that overshadows the implementation of the current MAI and where the MAI rather works as a mean to reach the superordinate objective. Secondly, the entrance of a new individual into the organisation brings existing knowledge and prior experience with the MAI which disrupts the incompatible culture. The adoption in the early stage is explained by the lack of theorisation in the diffusion process, whereupon the organisations are capable of customising the MAI to fit with present needs in the organisation. By uncovering these two motivational drivers, this study is able to give an understanding to a previously unexplained incompatible early adoption.

The Impact of Culture when Performing an Administrative Reorganisation –A Case Study of the Norwegian School of Economics
(2016-06-21) Andersson, Josefin; Östlund, Matilda; University of Gothenburg/Department of Business Administration; Göteborgs universitet/Företagsekonomiska institutionen
Background and problem: Academic institutions have a history of being structured with collegium culture. There is now a present discussion about the reallocation of power at these kinds of organisations turning to take on a management style similar to the one operating at corporations. The thesis will look at the impact of management control as a dependent factor of the resignation of the administrative director at the Norwegian School of Economics. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to get an understanding of how the historical management control affected the acceptance of the management of the new administrative director at the Norwegian School of Economics between 2010 and 2013. It also aims to investigate the influence of internal culture at the institution of this case. Thesis limitations: This thesis is limited to only look at the effects of the administrative reorganisation at Norwegian School of Economics between the years 2010 to 2013. It is produced to look at the power relations between the scholars and the management of the academic institution and do not consider possible effects on the administrative department or students at the institution. Method: It is a qualitative study based upon five semi-structured interviews made with scholars at NHH. The respondents were more or less involved in the critique that was arisen at the academic institution during the case. The empirical data has been analysed in relation to a theoretical framework about the importance to view management control as a package by taking into account the administrative control, cultural control and communication. Results and conclusions: The ignorance of former culture and its relationship with the present governance structure and the changes of the organisational design indicates to be the main explanation of the unwanted result of the management of the administrative director in this thesis. It caused a lack of balance in the power relations at the institution which made the scholars react on the situation. Suggestions for future research: It would be interesting to take part of a larger study with the purpose to identify the majority of universities on the basis of internal culture and power perspective. Another suggestion is to study the relationship between administrative control and internal culture in a broader perspective to see if there is a tendency of which possessing the most influence at an academic institution.

The process of planning and implementing an organizational change - A qualitative study of how institutionalized ideas of organizing influence sensemaking and sensegiving
(2019-07-02) Svensson, Cecilia; Andersson, Josefin; University of Gothenburg/Graduate School; Göteborgs universitet/Graduate School
Institutionalized ideas of organizing have a large impact and influence on the sensemaking and the sensegiving processes taking place during a change. However, more research on how this relation actually takes from needs to be conducted. This study explores how this relationship occurs in the context of an empirical case. With sensemaking and sensegiving as the theoretical framework, data has been collected from a company that is going through a change of its operative model. Focus of the study has been on the processes of planning, engaging and communicating during the planning and implementation of the change. Drawing from the findings of the case, where focus has been on how the members in the organization have talked about communication, an analysis has been conducted on how the institutionalized ideas of organizing have influenced the sensemaking and the sensegiving processes. The study also identifies a paradox in the case, namely that the organization is trying to change the present institutionalized ideas of organizing by actions that themselves are influenced by the same institutionalized ideas of organizing. The study contributes by extending the limited knowledge of how institutionalized ideas of organizing influence the processes of sensemaking and sensegiving and thus provide important knowledge to both research and practice.
