Exploring the process of AI integration seen through a resource and capability perspective: A qualitative study of international SMEs in the manufacturing industry
(2024-06-27) Alm, Emil; Chiu Falck, Johan; University of Gothenburg/Graduate School; Göteborgs universitet/Graduate School
This thesis investigates the necessary resources and capabilities to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in International Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (ISMEs) in the manufacturing industry. By applying theories as the Resource-Based View, Dynamic Capabilities, Absorptive Capacity, and the Technology-Organization-Environment framework, we construct our own Conceptual Framework to research the necessary internal capabilities in conjunction with external factors for ISMEs to integrate AI. This study uses a qualitative methodology and adopts an abductive approach, complemented by a multiple-case study design, where we spoke to eight ISMEs using semi-structured interviews. The research reveals that successful AI integration in ISMEs depends on a combination of firm-specific resources, such as financial resources, human resources, and data availability, alongside organizational capabilities like an innovative culture and strong absorptive capacity, this in turn makes it possible to leverage both internal and external resources. The study highlights the importance of strategic alignment between resources and capabilities, effective communication between management and board, and an environment conducive to technological adoption. As the study provides insight of facilitators and barriers of AI integration in ISMEs, this thesis offers practical implications for managers aiming to integrate AI.

(2022-02-15) Chiu Falck, Johan; Escalante Mattsson, Johnathan; University of Gothenburg/Department of Economics; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för nationalekonomi med statistik
This study evaluates the Swedish Competition Authority's (SCA) decision regarding Coop's acquisition of Netto in 2019. The food market is saturated, which means that there is a risk that the acquisition will lead to an inhibiting effect on competition. The Swedish Competition Authority's task is to prohibit an acquisition if it has an inhibiting effect on competition in the country as a whole or a significant part of it. By applying economic theory, we conduct an Ex-ante study of the acquisition that examines its effects on competition, in the form of price changes, as well as an assessment of its impact within the country. Then we perform an ex post study by using price data from the years 2018 and 2019 to establish the actual effects of the acquisition. The results of the ex-ante study suggest that SCA made a lack of analysis of the potential effects that the acquisition had on competition, and gave a lack of definition of what a significant part of the country is considered to be. Ex-post results, which provide some statistical significance, suggest that competition has worsened. The study indicates that SCA has made the right decision regarding the acquisition, but that the decision was made on the wrong grounds which can result in wrong decisions made in the future. However, in order to obtain a stronger result of the actual effects of the acquisition, the study should be repeated with price data that has had time to settle after the acquisition.
