In the autumn of 2018 during my internship I was cleaning a painting that had been exposed to fire. Beside the damage caused by fire and the degradation caused by age the painting was also covered in powder from a fire extinguisher. In contact with water the residue from the extinguisher turned into a soapy film over the paint layers. This soapy film was difficult to remove and had to be removed with wet cleaning methods. However the solvents used for removing the residue could also have a risk of transporting the residue even further into the paintlayers. When working with the painting I was looking for literature discussing how other conservators had dealt with this kind of cleaning and I realized there was quite a few literature discussing this matter. This realisation led to this bachelor thesis which goal is understand what kind of impact fire extinguishers may have on paintings and which methods that are used by other conservators in order to remove residue. In order to reach this goal a literature study was first carried out. Thereafter, interviews was made with professional paintings conservators. The conservators answered a set of made questions in order to explained their encounters with paintings covered in extinguisher residue. The result was then summarized and used in a final discussion.
The paint loss of Callmander’s stained glass windows: An investigation of the prevalence and causes behind the paint loss on Callmander and Svenska Glasmåleri AB’s stained glass windows

This MA-thesis investigates the loss of grisaille paint in the stained-glass windows created by the artist Reinhold Callmander and Svenska Glasmåleri AB, with the aim of understanding the prevalence as well as the reasons behind the issue. Stained glass has historically been in the periphery of conservation. This thesis seeks to generate valuable information for both future conservation decision-making and cultural history context. Understanding the reasons for the paint loss can serve as a first step in reducing the risk of further deterioration by raising awareness, highlighting urgency of action and providing information necessary to implement preventive measures. The methods used in this thesis consists of a literature review, condition assessments of Callmander’s stained glass in Gothenburg and Varberg, and technical analysis with microscopy, X-ray fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy of glass shards from two of Callmander’s windows. Through the condition assessments, the study indicates that paint loss is a common issue amongst Callmander’s stained glass windows. Furthermore, the study shows that manufacturing issues are likely responsible for paint loss, possibly due to insufficient firing. To fully establish the cause of paint loss, more research is needed.
