Item Temperature and Exports– Evidence from the United States(2019-07-02) Karlsson, Jimmy; University of Gothenburg/Graduate School; Göteborgs universitet/Graduate SchoolIPCC estimates anthropogenic global warming to have reached 1◦C com-pared to pre-industrial levels. This study evaluates the relationship of tem-perature fluctuations and exports, using high-resolution panel data of daily weather and monthly exports in U.S. states. I find significantly negative effects of both low and high temperatures, where one additional day with temperatures below -10◦C and above 25◦C reduces U.S. exports by 0.22%and 0.24%, respectively. The optimal daily average temperature for exports is estimated to approximately 10◦C. These new findings contradict previous research on temperature and exports, which has not found significant effects in rich countries. Under a ’business as usual’ scenario with a continued rise in CO2 emissions, I project an average reduction in U.S. exports by 12.7%at the end of this century. My result implies stronger economic incentives for rich countries similar to the United States to invest in climate change mitigation, and to plan for future adaptation against a warming climate.Item The Economic Impacts of Carbon Taxation and Climate Change(2025-09-02) Karlsson, JimmyClimate change constitutes one of the biggest societal challenges today, and carbon taxation is one of the most important policies to curb carbon emissions. This dissertation investigates the economic impacts of carbon taxation, and the economic damages caused by extreme weather. Analyzing a reform in Sweden, the research shows that carbon taxation can be an effective tool to reduce emissions in the manufacturing sector. It also shows that it can have negative effects on firm performance, by decreasing revenue and employment. The larger negative effect on firms’ demand for workers without a high-school degree suggests that carbon taxation increases labor market inequality. However, complementary analyses show no signs of increasing unemployment rates in local labor markets that are more exposed to the reform. Labor markets therefore seem able to mitigate the negative effects on labor demand induced by carbon taxation. These results contribute to the understanding of the distributional costs of the green transition.
