Item Det kritiska mellanrummet - En analys av essäfilm som reflekterande kunskapsform(2022-10-05) Karlsson, Simon; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperWe live in an audiovisual culture where film and moving images plays a central part of our daily lives. The film as a medium is approximately 130 years old, yet we are still discussing the same questions today as they did back in the beginning - questions about film and moving images' relationship to truth and reality. Against the background that we need more knowledge in how film and moving images construct, expresses and mediates notions about truth and reality, this thesis investigates what the three french essay films, Night and Fog (Nuit et brouillard, Alain Resnais 1956), Letter From Siberia (Lettre de Sibérie, Chris Marker, 1958) and Here and Elsewhere (Ici et ailleurs, Jean-Luc Godard & Anne-Marie Mièville, 1956) contributes as aesthetic forms of knowledge through perspectives of mediaand information literacy (MIL) and democracy. Through a framework based on theories from culture and filmstudies together with my own experience as a situated spectator, I investigate how the filmmakers experiments with filmic forms, parameters and narrative conventions, how the filmmakers treats and review their subject at play, and how the spectator becomes a part of the filmic structure and review. This study shows that filmic representation and the act of “speaking for others” is a conflicted and political process. The filmmakers place themselves and the spectator in “critical interstices” where notions of truth and reality can be negotiated which in turn makes the spectator aware of its own knowledge gaps and limited field of view. The essay films stimulates reflective film competencies which functions as a way to make the hidden parts of the filmic representation and truthmaking process, such as ethics, responsibilities and “silences” visible and reflected upon from the critical inbetweenness position.Item Drawing Conclusions from Politically Charged Information: A Case of Scientific Understanding or Identity Protection?(2019-10-22) Karlsson, Simon; University of Gothenburg/Department of Psychology; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för psykologiPreviously conducted research suggest that people may use their cognitive capacity in a biased manner when they process politically relevant information. This study let 280 US adults draw inferences based on statistics concerning two politically charged questions; gun control and climate change. To see if the expected political biases occur, the statistical content presented was manipulated to either support or oppose the “official” view of the participants’ own party. Further, the potential moderating effects of numeracy and epistemological curiosity was investigated. Contrary to predictions, no political bias could be found among participants. The potential explanations for the lack of results supporting the study’s hypotheses, as well as concrete suggestions for future research in the field, is given.Item Investor Relations framtid. Item Predicting Pedestrian Counts per Street Segment in Urban Environments(2020-07-08) Karlsson, Simon; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för data- och informationsteknik; University of Gothenburg/Department of Computer Science and EngineeringCities are continuously growing all over the world and the complexity of designing urban environments increases. Therefore, there is a need to build a better understanding in how our cities work today. One of the essential parts of this is understanding the pedestrian movement. Using pedestrian count data from Amsterdam, London and Stockholm, this thesis explore new variables to further explain pedestrian counts using negative binomial and random forest. The models explored includes variables that represent street centrality, built density, land division, attractions and the road network. The result of the thesis suggests ways for variables to be represented or created to increase the explanatory value in regards to pedestrian counts. These suggestions include: including street centrality measurements at multiple scales, attraction counts within the surrounding area instead of counts on the street segment, counting attractions instead of calculating the distance to the nearest attraction, using network reach to constrain the network at different scales instead of bounding box, and counting intersections in the road network instead of computing the network length.Item STATENS ANSVAR FÖR HISTORISKA UTSLÄPP AV VÄXTHUSGASER En normativ analys av analogin mellan slaveri och gamla utsläpp(2025-01-31) Karlsson, Simon; Göteborgs universitet/Statsvetenskapliga institutionen; University of Gothenburg/Department of Political ScienceThis essay seeks to provide an answer to the subject of the state’s responsibility for historical emissions of greenhouse gases. This is done through a normative analysis of the analogy between slavery and “old” emissions. In this essay, I take the assumption that states sometimes are responsible for things that happen on their land. Afterwards I evaluate an argument based on two premises. The first says that the state has responsibility for historical injustices like slavery. The second premise says that the state’s responsibility for slavery is equally relevant to the state’s responsibility for old emissions. I argue that both premises are true, and that the state therefore is responsible for old emissions. This is based on the intuition that its fair that the state is responsible for things like slavery and need to compensate for this. I further argue that reparations for slavery and old emissions implicate ethical collectivism, and that the state is the only agent that can provide victims with the reparations needed. At last, the result shows how a backward-looking principle like the polluter pays principle can be interpreted in a collective way.Item You play, we’ll watch – a study about e-sport consumption and community(2012-09-17) Karlsson, Simon; University of Gothenburg/Department of Journalism, Media and Communication; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för journalistik, medier och kommunikationTitle You play, we’ll watch – a study about e-sport consumption and community Author Simon Karlsson Semester Spring 2012 Tutor Malin Sveningsson Number of pages 67 (1 appendix) Aim The study aims to explore the motivations and needs behind e-sport consumption and the possible identity construction it entails. Method Qualitative methods: interviews and participant observations. Material Ten interviews with individuals from the barcraft community in Gothenburg, Sweden. Ethnography studies from four locations in total for the e-sport tournament GBG E-sport Open: three from qualifiers and one from the finals. Main results E-sport consumption proved to fill a variety of needs. Affective: To be entertained and experience emotional satisfaction. Social integrative: to connect with friends and other viewers. This proved also to enhance the affective need. Cognitive: better understanding of the game, which then later can be used while playing to enhance ones rank within the ladder. Tension release: to relax from a stressful day. E-sport consumption is preferably done with friends. This consumption with others also leads to a sense of belonging and identity. Outsiders might have a negative opinion about e-sports which also binds the consumers closer together and forms a subculture.
