The Internationalisation of Japanese Professional Business Services - Recent Developments and Future Prospects in Asia
(2014-12-12) Santic, Reno; Stig o, Anton; University of Gothenburg/Graduate School; Göteborgs universitet/Graduate School
Although Japan is one of the world's largest economies its service sector is less developed than that of other industrialised countries and the sector also lags behind in terms of internationalisation. Research has suggested several explanations to the current state of the sector, but there are also indications that the sector slowly is catching up. This study is concerned with the development of Japanese professional business services (PBS) in the light of structural changes in the Japanese economy as well as an increasing importance of services in Asia. Using a multiple-case study methodology based on semi-structured interviews, this study attempts to expand our understanding on the evolving nature of Japanese PBS rms. In particular the study makes an attempt to explain how structural changes in the Japanese economy have a ected the internationalisation of Japanese PBS rms. An attempt is also made to assess the future prospects of the Japanese PBS in Asia. The ndings suggest that structural changes in the Japanese economy have had a limited impact on the internationalisation of Japanese PBS rms, but internationalisation is an important issue. Government interference, underlying structures in society, languages issues and cultural di erences still signi cantly inhibit the internationalisation of Japanese PBS rms. However, Japanese PBS rms hold competitive advantages in serving Japanese clients. Therefore, Asia provides the best environment for future development of the Japanese PBS industry, because many Japanese rms have operations in the region. Major urban cities in the region will provide access to both markets and important business networks. Establishing connections to new non- Japanese business networks will be challenging given di erences in language in cultures. Therefore, employment and successful management of local sta will be essential.

The New competitors: A study of EMNCs in developed markets
(2011-10-14) Adolfsson, Jesper; Santic, Reno; University of Gothenburg/Department of Business Administration; Göteborgs universitet/Företagsekonomiska institutionen
The new competition, the EMNCs from the developing parts of our world are companies that have finally managed to get the rightful attention. Some argue that their occurrence is something that will drive the world forward for decades to come while others point them out as a threat to the living standards of the mature Western markets. Our focus, when writing about these competitors has been on their internalization and the strategies when choosing to expand abroad to developed countries. Besides from this we have gathered a lot of information about the subject in general and the theories mentioned about why EMNCs do expand the way they do. By comparing our research results with the general theories we have tried to see if the earlier theories are still up to date and if there is something new worth mentioning. The results of our thesis showed that many of the theories mentioned by other authors about the subject are still relevant when comparing with the chosen EMNCs that we wrote about. In addition, differences between the EMNCs in the two chosen industries, steel and telecommunication, have been identified. The use of for instance Joint Ventures is much more common in the telecommunication industry than in the steel industry. Acquisitions and mergers on the other hand seem to be the more common way of doing business in the steel industry that generally is in need of consolidation.
