In the complex world in which organisations exists is it not an easy task to make correct judgements of the environment. In most cases the competition is very keen. This situation makes great demands of having knowledge about your customers, suppliers and competitors to make decisions in favour of the organisation. Today there are tools that have the ability to discover new relations and patterns in the large amount of data that many organisations have stored for a considerable time. It is in this stage Data mining comes into the picture and if the technique is used properly can it in the long run give the organisation advantages in the competition. This essay is primarily focusing on how Data mining can support the decisionmaking process. It is treating which problems that can be solved with the support of Data mining and which the critical factors are when using Data mining and how they are handled. The purpose of the essay is to construct a realitymodel of how Data mining can support the decision-making process and the model is based on Macintosh framework. The essay?s theory chapter is primarily based on Scott Morton and Macintosh framework. The empirical study consists of suppliers of Data mining solutions, owners of the systems and users. This method is used to get different aspects of Data mining. The main results of the study are that Data mining primarily can be used on problems with high knowledge availability and with high variation in knowledge need. Critical factors to consider when using Data mining are systemintegration the knowledge and competence of the users and the quality of the data.swe
