The purpose of this qualitative and quantitative thesis is to examine whether the statement from The
National Agency For Education regarding religious studies in the upper secondary school as a subject of
crisis is relevant according to teachers in religion and their students. The survey was conducted by a
questionnaire among the students and interviews with teachers. The result of the survey shows that
students in general have a positive attitude towards religious studies. On the other hand it also shows that
they are not completely satisfied with how the teaching is conducted. The interviews with the teachers
shows that they are committed to their subject and that they also have a positive attitude towards the
teaching, though they are aware of the problems and difficulties that religious studies are facing. Still they
don´t agree that there is a crisis-situation. This thesis has a great impact on the teaching profession in that
way that it lifts religious studies and its problems to the surface and gives a balanced view of a
schoolsubject that has been thoroughly debated.
