English words and expressions in schoolchildren’s written tasks - a comparison between the “National tests” and Facebook

Abstract
Our aim in this study is to explore if the schoolchildren’s written language differs from the “National tests” in Swedish and from Facebook. We specifically want to see if we can discover words and expressions mainly from the English language or other languages in the “National tests” in Swedish written by the schoolchildren in the ages between 18-20 years old. The methods that we used to discover the results in this study was; to interview three teachers, have 30 schoolchildren answer a questionnaire survey, analyze 30 written “National tests” in Swedish by the schoolchildren and finally analyze two Facebook walls from two schoolchildren. The results in our study mainly conclude that the schoolchildren use English words and expressions in the Swedish “National tests”, but not as much as we hypothetically thought. We discovered no more than 12 occurrences of English words out of a total number 12 080 words in the NP material. What we learned from the results that we discovered is that; as future teachers we find it hard to draw the line to when and how much we should let our schoolchildren use English words and expressions in our classes. Our personal opinion is that the schoolchildren may be allowed to use English words and expressions in school, just as long as it is used in the right context. We do not believe that it is appropriate to use English words and expressions in the “National tests” in Swedish, but other written tasks in school, such as writing a novel or articles, English words and expressions may be allowed.
