JÄMTGÅRDEN Dokumentation med fokus på interiörens limfärgsdekor
Jämtgården, documentation with focus on distemper wallpaintings
Abstract
This bachelor thesis summarises the history of “Jämtgården” based on literature research and
empirical documentation. Jämtgården is a typical 1800th century duplex timber building
originating from the province of Jämtland. However, it was moved to Västernorrlands
länsmuseum in Härnösand in the year of 1918. During the 1920's the museum decided to
focus on the region of Västernorrland and therefore Jämtgården was somewhat left behind.
The building's interior walls are decorated with distemper paintings but the current condition
is poor.
The aim of this thesis is primarily to compile knowledge about the building and its interior
decorations as well as finding out whether primary distemper paintings, from the period
before the relocation, remain on the walls. Another purpose was to present a suggestion for
conservation of the fragments remaining for future research.
The documentation method used included an ocular research in visible- and UV light. Basic
tests of solubility was carried out to determine which type of paint that covered the walls. The
documentation revealed that all paintings at the first floor are reconstructions and that one
room at the upper floor accommodates distemper fragments from the 1800th century.
Examinations showed that consolidation of the paint layers is needed and should be carried
out as soon as possible. An annual inspection made by conservators is recommended in order
to maintain the paintings in a stable condition. The given information in this thesis could help
museum management in their ongoing efforts to preserve the building and its interiors.
