Lokal konservering av bok med mögelskador Förstärkning med Klucel® G
Local conservation of a book with mould damages Strenghtening with Klucel® G
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to make a plan for local treatment with Klucel® G of a book with mould
damage. The biggest problem concerned handling the book without loosing fragments and to
handle pages that were stuck together. In some places as many as six pages where stuck together
and it was not possible to separate them without loosing material or breaking them. The other
problem concerned the use of waterbased adhesives that might cause tidelines and paper
distortions as seen in another volume. The use of Klucel® G dissolved in ethylalcohol functioned
very well as strengtheners and also as an adhesive for lamination. Though it was not strong
enough to hold the infillings and a solution of Tylose® MH 300 P2, dissolved in minimum water
and diluted in ethylalcohol, was used there instead. This paper also investigates cellulose ethers
through a review of literature concerning their stability for longterm use. In general, the cellulose
ethers used in conservation are stable for longterm use, even though there are differences among
them and it is necessary to evaluate wich one to use for a specific object. Different molecule
structures, results in different properties and therefore it is vital that tests that makes comparisons
are done on the same cellulose ethers. Different viscosity, concentration and trademarks made it
difficult to make a fair comparison in the articles read. The conclusion is that more tests needs to
be done.
