Abstract
Abstract
The purpose of my study is to examine and compare two separate pre-schools’ work in the
studio with the children’s creative activities in an educational environment. One pre-school
utilizes the educational theories of the Reggio Emilia philosophy whereas the other is a
conventional municipal pre-school which uses the traditional teachings of Fröbel. I have
chosen to conduct interviews with an educationalist from each pre-school and to photograph
what I have seen in the two different studios in each pre-school and from that compose an
analysis. My main question at issue is “What differences and similarities are there between
the way of working in a studio in a Reggio Emilia influenced pre-school and a traditional pre-
school?”. I have found several similarities in the way the two different pre-schools work but
what I focus on in my analysis are the differences. The main difference is in the use of
material in the creative process and the way the municipal pre-school is more economical in
its way of letting the children use the materials. Both in the monetary way and in the way of
not letting too many different materials to be out at the same time which according to
Educationalist 1 can cause so-called chaos. In the Reggio Emilia pre-school however they
don’t want to create any boundaries by holding in on materials.
