Kommunala strategier för kulturhistoriskt intressanta miljöer

Municipal strategies for preserved environments

Abstract
The main purpose of this essay was to understand and discuss the problems the Swedish municipalities have when missing the profession in cultural preservation area. I have made two case studies where competence has been present in one and absent in the other. Further I intend to find out what material the Swedish municipalities needs in their work with the conservation of built environment. The first case describes Vallentunas main intersection and the adjustments needed to separate it from the local rail road. It identifies what the municipality deems important such as sight lines and access to the old church area. The ability to illuminate these items had not been possible without the knowledge and early participation of an expert in the field of cultural resource management. The second case revolves around an old croft in Österåker that was subject for a planned residential area. When the evaluation for the croft was made in 1997 it was considered the best preserved building of this sort in the area. The municipality have had ageing material for many years and lacking strategies for conservation, resulting in the crofts decay. It also led to explorations where no consideration were taken into account for sensitive environments. There are several problem areas that the municipalities have in their activity to preserve built environment. For example, importance of material for preservation, experts in the field, strategies for preservation and development and interplay within the activity. My conclusion is primarily about a comprehensible view of the activities were different routines should be implemented to safeguard a persistent environment. A possible solution is discussed where municipalities have tools to work with. Though it can only be done when an attitude about the conservation of built environment is changed, thus politicians have a major part to play.
