dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study is to investigate the use of paper on canvas as a support for oil
paintings in the sixteenth- and seventeenth centuries, and how this kind of object can be
conserved. A large painting on paper, glued to canvas from Dingtuna Church in
Västmanland, was in need of conservation. As the painting was going to be treated as a
composite object, the canvas was not to be removed; instead, the paper needed to be
pasted back onto the canvas.
A literature review was conducted to find out how similar objects had been conserved
previously and what kind of conservation methods could be conducted safely. Several
adhesives were selected and tests were carried out to find out which ones could be used
on the painting from Dingtuna.
The study indicated that wheat starch paste (11,5%), Plextol D360 and methyl cellulose
(5,5%) with a small amount Plextol D360 added gave the best results. The adhesives
was applied in areas where the original had failed. The loose paper was lifted and the
adhesive was applied by brush. Where a more fluid adhesive was needed, a mixture of
6% wheat starch paste and 1% gelatin gave a satisfactory adhesion. This mixture was
heated and injected where the other method was not applicable. | sv |
