Okulering av rosor - praktik och historik

Inoculate roses - practice and history

Abstract
Inoculation is a way to vegetative propagate roses in open field. The problem is that the number of skilled professionals and nurseries producing their own plant material are decreasing in Sweden. There is therefore a risk that the craftsmanship of how to inoculate roses will disappear. Practical knowledge in this subject is not a priority in today’s gardening programs. There are few documents on this way of propagating roses in Sweden. The purpose of this work is to document the history of inoculation, as well as proffeting from the skills of two experienced craftsmen. The historical review and the craftsmen´s documented knowledge and experiences are complemented by a practical test-cultivation. The aim is also to develop a manual which can be used for gardening courses. The method used is a literature review of books between the years 1722 - 2011. Two rose growers were interviewed. Practice was done to learn the technique of inoculation. In the test-cultivation 2 000 root stocks were planted. The result is both a historical survey and a practical description. The first part describes, on the basis of the various phases of the practical test-culture, how growers have inoculated roses from 1722 until today. It also includes answers to the question what is distinctive and unifying between the past and the present. The manual is a practical description of step-by-step explana- tions in text and pictures showing how to propagate roses this way.
