art.description.projectStrategies Of Magic #5 was performed as a part of Palettens Dark Seminar, which also comprised a lecture by the Cairo-based philosopher Graham Harman on object oriented philosophy and art. The event also marked the occasion of the release of Paletten number 3:2012 and the appointment of the magazine as the best Swedish Culture Journal of 2012. For this edition, Thomas and me had further developed our work with translation as a tool for transformation, and had incorporated an act where I record Thomas singing and playing guitar, playing it back in reverse to reveal a new content. Keeping this version of Strategies comparbly short, we otherwise focused mainly on the relationship between the physical and the immaterial aspects of existence, performing magic tricks such as The Un-Restored Vase and an alternative interpretation of Uri Gellers spoon-bending act. The nature and constitution of the Illusionist was addressed through a series of announcements made by a voice-over, while the lecture (the one permanent feature of Strategies) constituted the backbone and the red thread in the performance, discussing the difference between magic and trickery and the pursuit of real transformation.
art.description.summaryStrategies of Magic is a lecture performance by Annika Lundgren and an examination of the difference between trickery and transformation. The piece discusses the concept of magic in relation to political and philosophical questions regarding power structures, hierarchies of knowledge, identity and gender and celebrates the human potential of making the impossible possible. Strategies of Magic #5 is a collaboration with Swedish artist Thomas Dahl, and an edition designed specifically for the Paletten release at Lindholmen.sv
