Tear Mending in textile painting support Longterm stability and characteristic properties of adhesive and methods
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how adhesives and methods used for tear mending affects the painting and the textile support in the long term. The aim is to create a greater understanding of the adhesives and the methods used and also to highlight their individual qualities and character. The central questions in the study are: How do the adhesives and methods work and what qualities are needed in an adhesive for tear mending? How stable are the methods and adhesives in long-term? How should bridging be designed to get the best results? Do the various methods require different types of adhesives?
Two tear mending methods, tread-by-tread tear mending and bridging, are studied and compared. The adhesives tested for tear mending are Evacon-R, Plextol D 360 and Bind-flex 1161. The long-term stability of the two different tear mending methods and the adhesives were tested by exposing samples to heat and in that way accelerate the aging. Tensile strength of the samples was tested. The solubility of the adhesives were tested and studied before and after the accelerated aging process. The results shows that tread by tread tear mending affect the canvas structure less then bridging but it gives a weaker mending. Therefore it requires a strong adhesive. Plextol D 360 was the weakest among the adhesive but it showed a good solubility. Bind-flex was the strongest adhesive but also the most yellowing over time which indicates instability. Evacon-R showed good results, none yellowing and strong, the solubility test indicates that Evacon-R gets less soluble by aging.
