En studie av stolstillverkningen i Stockholm 1750-1820. Material och metoder
A studie of the chairmaking process during 1750-1820 in Stockholm
Abstract
The furniture design has been a part of the human experience since the beginning of
history. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to penetrate the chair manufacturing in
Stockholm between the years 1750-1820. The initial part of the essay it's an chair historic
part and starts with the antiquity and ends the year 1846, that was the last year of guilds in
Sweden.
The essay is based on four inventory lists of workshops that belonged to chair craftsman in
Stockholm between 1792 and 1812.
By studying their workshops I have been able to confirm what the chair maker's activities
where included, the craftsman only performed woodwork, no painting or upholstery.
There is two painting handbooks from the period between 1750 and 1820, that I have been
used in the essay to understand the painting manners on chairs during 18th century.
In order to establish whether this was the usual manners, a color sample from a chair made
by the chair maker E Ståhl was analyzed in the National Heritage Board's laboratories in
Visby. The method we used were scanning electron microscope.
The essay has been able to confirm some suspicions about how the chair manufacturing
went to in the current period. It can also be used as a first step in the chair manufacturing
developed in Stockholm. Hopefully the essay can be used for further in-depth studies.
