This report has explored the use of nanoparticles, micro-emulsions and chemical gels as advanced systems for extracting discoloration from mold on mural paintings. The purpose is to investigate the cleaning results and to compare them with the commonly used techniques used for the same purpose by practising conservator-restorers in Sweden. The aim of the work was to answer two essential questions: - Can nanoproducts be used in the conservation of sensitive distemper on walls? - How does a micro-emulsion react, compared to products that usually are used for the problem with discoloration by mold growth? This study involves a literature survey and experiments. The investigation of the quality difference between the cleaning results from micro-emulsions and solvents that are commonly used by conservator-restorers today is discussed. Furthermore, a simple study is preformed, regarding the quantity of solvents that penetrate into the surface in return to the amount that fills the pores. The study is completed with fieldwork using these products for the removing of discolouration from mold on a mural painted with a distemper. Futhermore, the nanoproducts where evaluated on stone treated with polymers. The polymers could be removed but a rest showed often left as evaluated by dark field microscopy. The products that where used was for this test was the polymers Akronal D500, Paraloid B72 and Mowilith DM 772. For the extraction the micro-emulsions B-mek, EAPC where used. The test showed best result on the stone treated with the polymer Akronal D500 and the mico-emulsion EAPC used to create the swelling and extracting of the polymer.sv
