Who visits the theater? A public survey of "I Annas garderob" and "Natten är dagens mor" at Göteborgs Stadsteater autumn 2014.
Abstract
The aim of this essay is to analyze the social data and habits of audiences attending the plays I Annas garderob, which had its world premiere at Göteborgs Stadsteater October 2014, and Natten är dagens
mor, which opened at Göteborgs Stadsteater September 2014. The analysis is based on reception theory and applies a gender perspective. I Annas garderob is a contemporary play written by Ann-Sofie
Bárány and directed by Suzanne Osten. Natten är dagens mor is a classical Swedish play written by Lars Norén and directed by Dennis Sandin. The author of this essay conducted a public survey at three performances of each production. The results are presented and compared with each other and with other similar research projects. The results
show that it was a startling difference between the number of men attending the two different
productions. Natten är dagens mor had twice as many men among the surveyed audience than I Annas garderob. Besides the gender differences, both productions had great similarities regarding the surveyed audience. The result also resemble the results of other similar studies.
