dc.description.abstract | If you ask garden enthusiasts all over the world what an English, Italian or French
garden is about, they most likely have a strong opinion about it. But what about the
Swedish garden?
This bachelor thesis is a recess in documentation and investigation in the subjects of garden history and garden design, implemented as a literature study and field investigation. The study consists of studies on two green environments that represent Swedish garden style outside Sweden, and about the originators behind them.
This has been complemented by studies of drawings, field studies and site analysis in
terms of spatial, color and shape analysis. The selected objects are: “A Tribute to Linnaeus” by Ulf Nordfjell and the Swedish Institute in Rome by Ivar Tengbom.
The hypothesis was that there are both general and specific Swedish elements in Swedish gardens abroad. How has the Swedish garden style articulated at the selected objects? What style traits are prominent? Which parts of the narration is ”Swedish”?
My starting point was to try to relate as objective as possible during the actual field studies and thereafter report the results in a systematic way. This despite the fact that there are so many visible and invisible factors that come into play when one forms an opinion on
elements such as spatiality, color and shape. By reporting the result in several different ways using several different methods, it is possible for others to do their own analysis later on. With the future, new perspectives are certain to bring new conclusions. A field study is a snapshot of how it looked at the specific time. Care, maintenance, changes and ruins of time can quickly transform an object. | sv |
