dc.description.abstract | This thesis is a critical examination and practical execution of August Holmberg's description and
Peter Sjömar’s drawings of a timbered octagonal well curb, as described in August Holmbergs
Byggnadslära. The investigation reveals that, while Holmberg may have offered a theoretical
description of a well’s construction, there is a lack of information in his descriptions to reconstruct the well curb. Furthermore Sjömar’s interpretation doesn’t correctly follow the description.
General questions in consideration: How are Holmberg's theoretical description and Sjömars
graphic interpretation compared with each other and in relation to a photography in the book?
What information is left unmentioned in Holmberg's description and Sjömar's drawings?
The aim of the study is a critical examination and a practical reconstruction of the wholes or parts
of Holmberg's and Sjömar's descriptions. The intention is to use the craftsperson’s working
methods and mind-set in an interaction with the theoretical descriptions to contribute to the
knowledge and understanding of traditional building methods, when written sources are incomplete or contradictory.
The method used for the study was based upon doctoral studies at the Department of Conservation at the University of Gothenburg, which was further specifically designed for the critical examination of source material and the following practical reconstruction. The source material is examined systematically and organized in a table format. From the data in the table a reconstruction process is developed where approaches and different hypotheses are tested and compared. The critical examination and reconstruction was successful in elucidating and testing the description, interpretation, methods and hypothesis of well structures as described by
Holmberg and Sjömar. | sv |
