art.description.projectReview of STRANDVERKET http://www.omkonst.com/15-vintersalong-strandverket.shtml The winter salon exhibition at Strandverket has taken place annually for the past three years. This year’s guest curator, Nina Bondeson, curated an exhibition of primarily painting and drawing/printmaking. In contrast to this the works she selected from me are sculpture. The central work in my part of the exhibition is Totemistic—which is essentially a tree covered with handmade wooden objects. The objects are tied on with string—the original of this exists as a work in my garden but a version of it is then made for gallery exhibitions. It was also commissioned in cast iron for a park in Angered in 2013, but it was vandalized and after repair will be placed in a park in Majorna. Another sculpture, Necklace for a tree, a circa 4 meter long ”necklace” of price tags and carved wood ”beads” is also exhibited, for the first time in Sweden. The exhibition was reviewed in OMKONST, a website for Swedish art and in Göteborgs Posten twice, once as a review and once as a chronicle. A work from the project ”Not just green” is also part of the exhibition. The project ”Not just green” received a grant of 10% tjänst as a research initiative from June to December 2015. The central idea of the project is a poetic investigation of the word ”green”. The word green is associated with many words and ideas. For example it is often used to designate ”natural” or ”ecological” products. It signifies ”fresh” but also ”envy” and illness. A reference for this project is the book of the American poet William Gass’s empiric examination of the word blue. The work began as an investigation of the names of green colors from diverse international color systems. The method of presenting them as an embroidered list was tested on smaller works. That they should be embroidered gives importance to each name and also focus on them as equal. Same green thread on same green fabric. The most recent embroidery has over 200 color names embroidered in one green shade thread on a piece of fabric which is digitally printed as wood chip composite board. This is hung on a wooden curtain rod and framed by curtains which look like normal decorative curtains. They are green with an embossed wood grain pattern, and frame the central text-textile work. The textile work itself is a representation, through the material, of what we often see out a window—the forest: different shades of green and wood. The last piece in the suite of works is a wooden plaque cut into the shape of a ”sale” sign, recognizable from discount stores. This starburst shape however can also be seen in paintings and frescos from 1500’s forward to designate ”light” behind the head of a significant figure The words ”Expectation free” are sandblasted into the surface. Materials are important in my work. The meaning of the work develops through exploration of the visual and functional properties as well as significance of the material. In the case of the green curtain, the selected technique, embroidery, refers to personalized decorative works which are often done for the home. It is a list of 200 versions of one idea, and the textile is a representation of some other material. A question that arises is what does the color green actually represent? Do we have certain needs for certain colors? Are we speaking about the same thing when we share words if green is both mystic lake and iced kiwisv
