art.description.projectThis workshop was created and carried out by Mary Coble with an open call for participants on the occasion of the 2015 Umeå Pride Parade. Situated as part of Coble’s larger artistic research project Gestures of Defiance that evolvs around the histories of queer activism and related political protests. Questions are asked such as: How can resistance be formulated from a queer or marginalized position in consideration of/with power, privilege, categorization and normalization? What are the tactics, props and gestures used in the history of queer activism related political protests? How can they be archived and activated and re-performed? Is “tactical frivolity” a viable strategy of protest? Focusing on queer strategies of resistance attention is on the raised, clenched fist as a key symbol of protest. This workshop considers “how the raised fist is an iconic marker and gesture of defiance within minorities’ fights against oppression. The workshop will begin with an introduction to the history of the raised fist and contemporary examples of how the fist continues to be a relevant symbol. The discussion will lead to shared reflections on the personal relevance of the raised fist for each of us with the undertaking of then creating our own fist flags that we will then march with during the Pride Parade. What are nowadays most often referred to as “Pride Parades” originally grew from social activist movements with the urgent need to march for space, visibility and solidarity. While it is important to celebrate queer pride and progress for lgbtq rights, this workshop insists on making room for resistance to the normative mainstreaming and the dominating political and social culture, when it produces discrimination, exclusion and repression. The heteronormativity and homonationalism that can be experienced through much of the commercialization of Pride events today conceals that there is much work to be done. Lets raise our fists in solidarity with those who do not yet have the rights that the privileged majority of our community has. As a part of the project "The White House", "The Centre for Arts and Education" will collect donated flags from the participants in the workshop to "The Popular movement archive in Västerbotten". It is a county archive with the assignment to collect and store documents from associations and social movements in the county of Västerbotten. One of "The White House" aims is to add on visibility of lgbtq-activities to broaden the archives and state the existences of lgbtq-people in the history and the culture heritage.” The Gestures of Defiance Zine (ISBN: 978-91-982585-0-9) holds a collection of fist symbols from the 1960s to today as well as an introduction to the fist and glitter as gestures of defiance by Mary Coble. Two commissioned essays further contextualize the raised fist iconography: Lincoln Cushing provides a historical overview of the clenched fist symbol, and Mathias Danbolt offers a queer political argument for raising our fists today in a piece written on the occasion of Coble’s Protest in Pride. In addition, a short, reprinted text by Hadassah Damien describes how queer sexual politics and sexual practice intersect in the symbol of the clenched hand. Coble has also compiled a selection of glitter bomb examples, mapping out high publicity glitter bombings together with a contextualization of the action.sv
art.description.summaryThis workshop was situated around the image and power of the raised, clenched fist. It was structured in three parts: 1. A presentation on the history and contemporary urgency of the raised fist taught from the Gestures of Defiance Zine. 2. A group discussion and creation of fist flags and banners 3. Jointly marching in the Umeå, Sweden Pride Parade carrying fist flags and banners that were created. It was commissioned by The Center of Arts and Education’s and the Women’s History Museum in Umeå, Sweden. This was part of The Center of Arts and Education’s project The White House that “aims to add on visibility of lgbtq-activities to broaden the archives and state the existences of lgbtq-people in the history and the culture heritage.”sv
