Sloyd and handicraft as pedagogical tool

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate in which ways sloyd and handicraft gives us knowledge in other areas. One of the discussions according to sloyd and education is about how the teachers can motivate the purpose of the sloyd subject. Some teachers find this hard. According to them the sloyd subject should gain more respect if it would be more connected to the other school subjects. I`m interesed in finding and presenting research that gives examples on how sloyd works as an asset in educational contexts and how sloyd and other subjects are connected. My interest to this field developed in november 2015, at an internship at Kulturskolan. One of the goals in the operation of Kulturskolan is to collaborate with the public schools by using handicraft and sloyd as tools for knowledge transfer. By doing so the pupils learn not only handicraft, but also other forms of knowledge that comes along with the progress. In this way the pupils realize that different subject are linked and are depended on eachother. In this study I`m investigating Kulturskolans lessons that integrates sloyd and other subjects. To evaluate the outcome of the lessons I have interviewed a primary school teacher and the sloyd pedagogue from Kulturskolan. A litterature study has also been made to investigate the connection between sloyd and other areas and to gain a whither perspective from the outcome of the study of Kulturskolan. The result of the study shows that sloyd have many qualites as a school subject. Sloyd means so much more than just using tools and materials for the creation of objects. The conclusion is that its almost impossible to make sloyd without the reasoning about how it relates to other areas. Sloyd is depending on other subjects to give meaning to practitioners, and other subjects are depended on sloyd to give meaning about how to use them and their knowledge. Finally sloyd is one of the subjects in school that practise creativity which is nowadays one of the most important skills when students finish school and start looking for jobs.
