Metoder för behandling av blinderingar med fokus på regenerering Med fallstudie från Göteborgs konstmuseum
Methods for Treatment of Blanchings with Focus on Regeneration. With a Case Study from Gothenburg Museum of Art.
Abstract
In this essay the different methods used by conservators to treat the damage known as blanching are compared and evaluated through a literature study backed by a short questionnaire-based survey and two case studies. The essay revolves around blanching in the varnish layer and not the type of blanching that can appear in the paint layer. The method known as regeneration or Pettenkofer’s process is the main focus of the evaluation. The main goal has been to shed light on the risks and problems involved with each method and clear up the circumstances when each method is at its most effective and poses the least amount of risk to the paintings. This was done in order to raise awareness of the options available in different situations.
There is a perceived gap in the literature and as a possible result of this many conservators seem to invent their own version of regeneration with solvent vapors. This could potentially result in unsuccessful results which puts the paintings in harm’s way.
According to the survey, regeneration is a popular method that seems to yield satisfying results. The literature on the other hand, points to the treatment having negative side effects that reveal themselves long after the treatment. How severe these effects really are, is not fully understood. It is therefore not possible to draw a conclusion regarding whether the use of the regeneration method is appropriate or not; but, since these risks have been clearly demonstrated, it would be wise to consider other options in situations where they are possible.
