Kultur(v)arv Historiens roll vid exploatering av ett varvs- och hamnområde på Södra Älvstranden i Göteborg

Cultural Heritage and Shipyards - History's role in the exploitation of a shipyard and port area on the south river bank in Gothenburg

Abstract
The primary purpose of this study is to examine the preserved buildings and structures in the port area of Majnabbe in Gothenburg and to sort out any cultural values in the studied area. By talking to stakeholders the goal is to try to determine how these values are considered at a possible development of the area. The study also includes a comparison with a converted former port and industrial zone in Malmö to identify any similarities and examples of successful con-version. This study was conducted in April and May 2016 and consisted of a literature review and archive studies. These initial steps were followed by field studies which included document-ation and analysis of existing buildings and structures in the area. The thesis begins with a historical review of the district of Majorna and its shipyards with particularly focus on the shipyard called Varvet Kusten to determine and explain the historical context of the studied area. Then follow descriptions of the existing buildings and the area and a chapter relating to the stakeholders’ visions for the future. The study established that there are several preserved buildings and structures relating to the old shipyard industry in the port area of Majnabbe. In case of new housing construction in the port area, existing values of the built environment should be taken into account. One of the significant aspects in this regard are the lines of sight from the hill of Majnabbe. Furthermore, this thesis suggests that in future planning of the area it should be considered to rebuild the old harbor basin to reinstate lost cultural values.
