”A sloyd basket” – A study about sloyd and handicraft in work with reminiscence
Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine how/in what way a reminiscing kit can be used from “a making perspective” in sloyd with a focus on people with dementia. The ambition is to give a base for someone to create a sloyd/handicraft basket with various craft techniques that can be used in elderly care. The ambition of “the sloyd basket” is that it can be reproduced and used in other crafts contexts. This study is made with a phenomenological approach with four interviews and five respondents and one study of a reminiscing sloyd kit and its contents. The theoretical approach is to show that sloyd and handicraft gives wellbeing and at the same time it is a embodied memory that creates and recreates. Craftmaking is considered as an intangible heritage that will help the community to remember their history and traditions. The survey describe the various respondents views on sloyd, craftmaking and the work of reminiscence from a craft perspective. Memory baskets with craft products can be used as a memory trigger. Respondents reported what kind of techniques that might work in the context and in the project " Meetings with memories " . Respondents also talks about the joy of sloyd and handicraft as a creative activity for participants with dementia. The results shows that sloyd and handicraft can be used in work of reminiscence and as a memory trigger for people with dementia. It can help them to remember, talk and even be creative by themselves. A handicraft basket would be a tool in reminiscing and it is an intangible heritage that we save with objects and the discussion of them. Memories and stories are intangible heritage that we pass on to the next generations.
