The main purpose of this thesis is to look into the experiences of the activity of reading alone in school. Specifically students and teachers have been interviewed about their view on the time spent reading chapter books during Swedish lessons. The gathered information creating the result and analysis of this thesis is extracted from interviews with sixteen pupils in fifth grade, their Swedish teacher and three other teachers of Swedish at the same school. The qualitative interview study has a phenomenological viewpoint and the thesis’ aim is not to generalize but to exemplify and analyse people’s stories. The empiricism has been thematically analysed and the three themes bearing meaning are peace and quiet in a fictional world, self-esteem and read alone and the pupils’ different preconditions and potentials.sv
