The characteristic surface in rough-cast plasters has been changing ever since masons started using the technique. The changes are due to the variations in architectural styles as well as the progress in the industry with new methods of handling the plasters and different application techniques. The new techniques involved machinery and the production of the plasters where prefabricated in industries rather than at the construction sites. There are currently no methods of describing the surface of a rough-cast plaster. This, in combination with lack of knowledge about the variations in different rough-cast surface structures, can be a problem in case of a reconstruction of an old building or in the decisions of selecting the right plasters for a certain building. The ‘wrong’ surface of a building can change the aesthetic expression of the entire surrounding area as well as in the building itself. The purpose of this work has been to develop a method for describing the surface structure of the rough-cast plasters with text, image and measurable values. The aim is that the method will be able to describe individual surface structures or variations and similarities between different rough-cast surface structures.sv
