art.description.projectFinancial cushions are a series of cushions which are embroidered with “truisms for the financially conscious or unconscious”. They are embroidered on cushions referring to embroidered textiles traditionally made by women to express ideas about the home and family values. The real estate market has become increasingly a place of speculation. Apartment buildings are built for the luxury (speculative) market. This certainly affects the possibilities of people with lower incomes to choose where and how they will live. It also creates a stereotypical look for the home which is based on competitive market styling rather than the traditional meaning of home as a refuge and individual expression. The cushions mimic the styling of luxury goods but present critical ideas for reflection. It is an experiment to communicate directly with a public to present an artwork in a “commercial” space without the confirmation of the work as art as in the traditional commercial space for art: the gallery. It is interesting to work collaboratively, and to expand the means of working with text based art. To create a different and shorter distance between work and public was part of the motivation to place the project on Etsy.sv
