| art.description.project | The book is a presentation of Gerard Bonnier as an art collector and publisher. It has a cultural sociological perspective and analysis his position and influence in Swedish art from 1940s to mid-1980. It consists of letters, notes and other documents from the Bonnier Family Archive, and other sources. By following Gerard Bonnier as an art collector the story unfold influential institutional networks and alliances in the art scene, as well as the art market.
Instead of a traditional presentation of the works in the book, each painting or sculpture photographed against a white background, they are photographed on site. The collection is, and has always been, hanged in the office spaces and is a important part of the publishing house’s identity. As a curator and photographer (I have a formal photography exam and have been using photography partly as a artistic practice) I photographed the works myself and edited the more than 100 images as the main part of the publication (see pages 38–255 in the attached pdf). The idea of including the context of the works was inspired by Louise Lawler and her photographic series on collections. It reveals much more than just the art works, and reveals how art is used and presented outside the museum context. One of the interesting aspects is how the works are integrated (or not) in the rooms and in relation to other works. It is often a totally different than in todays highly professionalized field of curating. | sv |
