Straight Angles With a Dash of Romance –A Garden Historical Survey of the Residential Gardens of the Million Programme
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to do a garden-historical survey of the residential gardens of the swedish million program to complement the Swedish garden history. They are in both a time and knowledge gap where it is neither new nor very old. In order to understand these gardens, we also need to understand the single-family houses and the housing and social situation at the time.
The study focuses on the garden’s color, form and spatiality. The source material studied consists of self-created empiricism using field studies of six objects and literature from the million program era.
The common denominator of the gardens is that there is a lawn, a patio, a surrounding hedge or plank, a perennial border, a fruit tree and some evergreen plants in the front garden. These are not unique for this period, they are elements that have been found both earlier and later in the garden history. It lays more in the details of the elements and how they have been combined that tells you that it is a residential garden of the swedish million program.
