Skiftesverk med ”skift” av timmer. En utvärderande hantverksprocess av ett spannmålsmagasin
Post and plank with infill of “logs” – a evaluate crafts process of a granary
Abstract
The post and plank construction is part of the Swedish wooden house tradition, although the
method is about to be forgotten. This thesis investigates a unique construction detail found in a post and plank granary in Västergötland, a detail that is not described in the Swedish literature.
The intention is to contribute to the knowledge of the subject by using a craftsmen’s knowledge
and working methods.
The thesis is approaching the detail with an evaluate crafts process. The practical experiment is presented in an operation plan developed by carpenter Ove Malm. The plan explains the craft in a methodically way and describes the parts to be investigated. Furthermore, a reconstruction is
based on the information and hypotheses that emerge in the operation plan. Finally, a survey is
made over buildings that may contain the same detail, this to put the detail in a comparative
perspective, and thus providing increased knowledge of the Swedish post and plank.
The investigation has found, that one of the qualities of the detail is that it enables the
construction of a post and plank of this size. With this unique detail, the heavy log shifts can be mounted after the timber frame is rested and strained.
