Restaurering av profiler i trä - en jämförande studie av metoder för profilhyvling
Restauration of wooden mouldings - a comparative study in methods of making mouldings
Abstract
Wooden mouldings have been used in buildings for hundreds of years and is a very common
feature that must be cared for during restauration work. To be able to reconstruct old mouldings with precision is important in these situations and different methods of doing this can be used. Though most of these methods work well, they usually require tools to be custom made to be able to produce a specific moulding profile. There is instead a method of hand planing mouldings that uses simple planes called hollows and rounds. With these it is possible to make almost any moulding profile without having to first make a new tool for the job. The purpose of this thesis has been to compare this method against another common method, that of ordering the custom moulding from a planing mill. By making determent moulding profiles by hand and documenting the time it takes from raw material to finished product and then ordering the same mouldings from the mills, a comparison could be made based on efficiency, quality and overall price of the products. The result has shown that it is possible to make moulding by hand more efficiently compared to the milled counterpart, if only small amounts must be made. It also shows what quality defects might be expected from both methods and finally that the choice between hand planing or milling should fall on whether the original moulding being replaced was hand planed or milled.
