Aims and objectives: The aims of the study were defined in collaboration with a representative from the local police department in Gothenburg. The first aim was to identify and present current problem-areas in Västra Nordstan, that in accordance with CPTED, may be considered to lead to decreased feelings of security and/or increased levels of crimes within the area. The intention was to clarify current problems within the area and to define which areas that should be prioritized in future development work. The second objective was to present action proposals that, in accordance with CPTED, could lead to increased feelings of safety and/or decreased levels of crimes within the detected problem-areas. The purpose of this was to demonstrate how CPTED-oriented principles could be converted into practical actions and to clarify which actions that should be prioritized within the problem-areas. Method and data: The empirical material consists of qualitative data that was collected through observations of Västra Nordstan and through semi-structured interviews with actors, that in different ways are represented within the area. The data was also collected through unstructured conversations with residents in the area and with people that are working with crime prevention-, and/or safety-oriented work in Sweden. The aim of the interviews and the conversations was to gather additional information concerning what principles within CPTED that could be identified in Västra Nordstan, and which principles that could not. The aim was also to gather opinions concerning possible needs of improvements and suggestions regarding future actions within the area. In total, the study consists of ten observations, eight semi-structured interviews and approximately twenty-five unstructured conversations. Results: Three problem-areas were identified within the area of Västra Nordstan. These were referred to as: (1) The stairs at Nedre Kvarnhusgatan, (2) The short side of Tyska Kyrkan, and (3) Kronhusparken and its nearby areas. The areas consist of problems that, in accordance with CPTED, could be considered to lead to decreased feelings of security and/or increased levels of crimes and these areas should be prioritized in future development work. The presented action proposals concerns, for example, the importance of increased opportunities of informal, and formal monitoring of physical environments, enhanced lightning, improved maintenance of built, and physical environments and the importance of creating social venues. The presented actions cover all six principles found within CPTED and the actions have been carefully defined and motivated.sv
