Description of project
Through making contexts around the exhibition “Havets kvinnor (Women of sea)”together with Hyung S. Kim (photographer), Heeyoung Ko (filmmaker) and Sooni Kim (local researcher and descendant of Jeju women divers), also with immigrant women in Gothenburg, the Western institutionalised view on a specific distanced culture has been challenged. The project attempted to include diverse audiences who don’t usually come to public spacesby exploringactive listening methods. In keeping with the strive of diverse voices, the project also tried to challenge the conventional use of contemporary photography and film in an exhibition space; cultural objects, stories, texts and participatory elements were interwoven with visual representational works of art. Focus of the exhibition consisted of people’svoices: communities, women, immigrants, visitors. The opening ceremony of the exhibition attracted a record number of visitors(approx. 1000)in one afternoon and film screenings and food performanceswere more than fully seated. As a pre-event, Filmhuset in Stockholm screened the exhibition film including the presentation of the exhibition by artists and curator. In addition, artist talkswere arranged at Kvinnofolkhögskolan, Gothenburg, addressing solidarity of women’s identities. An extra film screening and a food performancewere held atBlå stället in Angered, a surburban culture centrein Gothenburg.
