This work takes its title from a booklet Eva Weinmayr produced in 1998 presenting a fax correspondence between the artist and Rosamund Felsen, of the Rosamund Felsen Gallery in Santa Monica. The Gallery faxed copies of Bruce Nauman’s Fingers and Holes etchings to Weinmayr in anticipation for a sale, who, upon receipt, suggested to acquire and collect the fax copies instead of the original Bruce Nauman etchings. The Gallery subsequently informs Weinmayr, that faxes are neither art, nor a collectible, instead only an immediate means of communication. This correspondence, captured in the booklet Lery (1998), and exhibited in the exhibition Fabriques de contre-savoirs in form of enlarged photocopies presents a spontaneous interaction around questions of authenticity, marketplace value and printing technologies. “For this group exhibition, works by Jay Chung & Q Takeki Maeda, Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, Alex Martini Roe, Eva Weinmayr have been brought together around a body of works by British artist John Latham. This exhibition, which brings together artistic practices of different generations, reflects on interpersonal relationships shaped by transmission of knowledge, as well as the power structures and hierarchies thereby legitimized. The works on view point towards the impossibility of objective transmission and encourage the production of critical tools questioning norms associated with learning processes.” (press release)
