Description of project
The exhibition “Unravelling: Från en historia till en annan” was developed through a previous installation in apartment galleri HOME SWEET HOME in Bangalore India in July 2017.
The point of departure is representative of the practice of Leslie Johnson, often based in reassessing and revaluing cast-off goods which surface in flea markets with a conceptual framework researching the origins of the goods.
In this case it is the “doily”, a typical handcraft of women identified as a handcraft since the 1700’s and perhaps best known as a decorative crochet object used to protect furniture, or hide furniture scars.
Imagining the hours of contemplation which accompany the creation of such handwork and relating it to recycling culture the installation moves between the three main windows of the konsthall. The strings of the unraveled doilies lead us in maze-like patterns through the air to arrive at objects which punctuate the meanings which flow between recycling, handwork and adaptation of commercial products from quotidinianal life, for design efficiency. One follows the strings of the unravelling doilies from large scale photos of piles of broken or cast off furniture at the recylcing center to Queen Ann style chairs with levitating doilies to finally, building supplies displayed on a pile of spray painted green wood chips. The building supplies suggest a future where the the surface of wooden tables is made from a wood veneer which instead of faking the pattern of wood, fakes the pattern of piles of cast-off furniture. Pre-scarred surfaces which need no protection.
The installation continues with 16 drawings placed on either side of the escalators going in and out of the Hammarkullen tram stop. The drawings are all based on an object popular in the 70’s for car travelers. A plastic shape of a hand on a spring which could be placed in a window or in particular in car windows so that passing cars communicated with each other through the waving hand. The 16 drawings elaborate on the waving hand, as a non-linguistic greeting, as a symbolic gesture, waving to the past from the present.
