The emergence of a new value-based societal cleavage has changed the political mobilization patterns in Europe and correlates with attitudes to immigrants, cultural diversity and European integration. Previous research has demonstrated that education is the single most important factor to understand different positions within this cleavage, although there is a lack of unity in the understanding of the importance of the influence of education. One explanation is that the education system enhances liberal values that transfer to the students. An alternative explanation is that education sorts out people to different labour market positions resulting in different interests. By focusing on these two main models of explanations in a comparative study of Sweden and Denmark at two points in time, 2002 and 2014, my purpose is to broaden the understanding of what might cause different positions among this value cleavage. The results from my multiple regression analysis show that the first model – the socialization explanation – seems to be the most important determinant. However, some unexpected results indicate that the socialization explanation needs to be further investigated.sv
