Spårning - en medeltida klyvteknik
Spårning – a medieval technique of controlled cleaving
Abstract
The craftsmanship of the medieval cleaving with spårning is a forgotten technique that
has been re-discovered during the science project of reconstructing the old church of
Södra Råda. With minimal to none existing sources of known knowledge, the approach
to unveil the spårning has been one of reevaluating the methods of examination and
above all the implementation of common academic methods. In this essay the technique
isolated to spårning is examined in an in-depth study conducted with practical, reconstructive experiments and an analysis of the tacit knowledge attached to the craftsmanship.
Describing a craftsmanship with its techniques, choices, methods and tools with merely words are a difficult, if not an impossible task. By adding photos to the descriptive words some progress is gained and, as in this essay, analyzing the dialog between the craftsman and the material gives a chance of documenting the practical methods and techniques in a graspable way. The purpose of the study is to make knowledge about the forgotten technique spårning and its methods available, or, at least a bit more understandable.
