"Också en demokrati behöver kunna försvara sig själv". En kulturkritisk och rättsfilosofisk studie av hur samhället försöker hantera fascism

Abstract

This thesis aims to explore how different actors in society discusses how society should handle fascist organisations. This includes politicians, journalists, the legal system and activists and antifascists. I began by looking at the fascist organisation Nordiska Motståndsrörelsen, NMR, and the manifestation they organized on the 30th of september 2017 and the discussions that were had about them on different platforms by different groups of people, in conjunction with and after the manifestation. By implementing theories concerning cultural hegemony, discourse and power, discipline and Walter Benjamins thoughts on the western legal system and violence I was first able to determine there are three different viewpoints which are common: that NMR should be banned outright, that their demonstrations should be limited and controlled in various ways or that they shouldn't be banned nor regulated at all. Secondly, I was able to determine which of these viewpoints could be considered hegemonic and what this debate signifies beyond a society trying to handle fascist organizations. Further research needs to be made in order to follow the coming turns of events in the rapidly changing political climate of the west.
