Abstract

In this bachelor thesis we investigate literary resources in a text possible to use in the class of Spanish as a foreign language, when the purpose is an intercultural knowledge. Our purpose is, to deepen our knowledge about the representation of the social and culture conditions of life in Spanish America, in the short story “La siesta del martes” written by the Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez. According do previous studies, reading literary texts could have a positive impact on students´ comprehension and interpretation of social and cultural understanding. Our starting point is using critical thinking, to avoid the idea of other cultures as exotic, or as something very different because we want to make possible the intercultural perspective. The social culture representation in the text show different perspectives. We find, a distant way to look at the social differences that could be like the colonial way of looking at the Spanish Americans. We also find the church´s view, that inequality could be the desire of God and finally the idea of the poor people accept their life as it is but they struggle for their dignity. These perspectives leave to the reader, the possibility to use critical thinking in the text and find his/her way of understanding the text from another perspective. Our result shows that the text, “La siesta del martes, offers possibilities for the students in the classroom of Spanish as a foreign language, to discuss and problematize sociocultural differences.
