art.description.summaryA point of departure in this project is to investigate man – machine interactions, with the improvisation group Natural Artefacts that features a mix of acoustic and electronic musical instruments. The main questions are: is it possible to program electronic instruments, such as sequencers, samplers, and synthesizers in such a way that an organic “groove and feel” of jazz occurs? And is it possible to perform with these machines in a live context retaining a “true” jazz feeling? The author has composed a number of compositions that in different ways explore this avenue, with an aim to blend elements from diverse musical genres and traditions such as free improvisation, serial music, minimalism, ambient, electronica, and electroacoustic music. At the MIRAC conference Nislson presented recordings with the jazz group Natural Artefacts in order to exemplify subject matter. In addition, at this particular occasion however, Nilsson performed his music in a more relaxed setting, namely in connection to the conference dinner together with two employees at Dalarna university: Sören Johansson drums and Tootie guitar. By various reasons the performance was not recorded, mainly because it was simply a first-time performance and not particularly well rehearsed, and therefore not aimed for sharing. See attached Research Catalogue exposition “MIRAC 2019” for the actual presentation. (open the folder and drag and drop the “default page” to a web browser).sv
