#ALLIANCES
Summary
What connections are opening up between the history of art associations as the first civic initiatives of art reception and the changing strategies of production, communication, reception and effectiveness in the digital age?
Against the backdrop of digital and analogue forms of civil society engagement, the #Alliances initiative initiates socio-material dynamics of publishing, gathering, discussing and acting in a visually-spatial, tangible process. Strategies of global, networked hashtag activism overlap with the local, legal format of founding an association. This opens up a field between action and communication, engagement and observation, visualization and activism as well as reach and effectiveness.
In a joint action, forms of civic engagement are tested, produced, explored and discussed: as direct experience for the participants and as visual and spatial-material traces of a higher-level socio-material choreography.

Description of project
Which connections can be drawn between the history of german art associations that were founded as first civic spaces for art presentation in the early 19th century and today´s changing hierarchies, forms of production as well as reception of communication and decision-making in the digital age? Based on this thought, I have developed a workshop to be enacted within the context of the exhibition <3wetransform at the Art Association in Kassel, Germany.
Against the backdrop of digital hashtag activism and the analogue tradition of civic associations both workshops address socio-cultural to political dynamics of publishing, gathering, discussing and acting in a visual and spatial, experiential process. Digital-global and locally-embodied qualities will overlap, exploring a field of tension between action and communication, involvement and observation, visualization and activism, reach and effectiveness. In the workshops, a socio-material choreography of publishing and gathering of interests, the joint discussion and action should arise as the work as such. Materials include the interplay of bodies (the subjective, sensory-emotional perception, expression, movement), various qualities of social interaction (distances, tempi, rhythms, dynamics, gestures, communication) as well as spatial-material structures and objects, that mediate the process. In a collective production process, instead of objects civic engagement will be created, experienced, observed and discussed through artistic means and with local participants: as direct experience for those involved and as visual and spatial-material traces of such actions for outsiders to observe (visual documentation, spatial Setting, produced documents).
Workshop #Alliances
The workshop #Alliances initiates a participatory, serial production process that produces a series of civic associations. The process of the founding such civic associations is to be accomplished, embodied, experimentally explored and made visible in the exhibition space together with the workshop participants. Ideally, it will become a mass production process that brings about a big variety of foundations of associations. And thus bringing forth and gathering relevant concerns, civic engagement represented in form of a legal person whose concerns endure beyond the individual body.
The workshop examines the various phases of founding the association with embodying, visual and discursive means. The work material consists of the people involved and their interactions, a spatial setting and visible traces of the process.
