RIVNINGENS SÅR En analys av de relationer och känslor som kommit till uttryck i samband med rivningen av Astoriahuset
The wounds of demolition – An analysis of the relationships and emotions that arose due to the demolition of the Astoria house
Abstract
When a building is demolished, different reactions and emotions can arise. These reactions and emotions can be an expression of the relationship between humans and architecture. The purpose of this essay is to illustrate the relationship between humans and architecture by identifying the emotions that may arise in the event of demolition. To explore this purpose, a case study has been conducted regarding the demolition of the Astoria house in Stockholm.
By analyzing articles and websites as well as performing an interview with a person who played an active role in the protests of the demolition of the Astoria house, expressions of the relationship between humans and architecture have been identified and developed into themes. These themes have then been compared and analyzed in regards to the reasoning presented in the chosen phenomenology literature.
The result of the analysis concludes that the emotions associated with demolition, as well as the actual relationship between humans and architecture, should be taken more seriously in order to ensure a better long-term outcome for all parties involved.
