The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to contribute to an increased understanding of the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) in the industry. Thus the two research questions are: How are companies affected by the EU ETS? And Why do companies choose to accept the instrument? Since ETS is an instrument used to encourage actors to act for the collective interest by reducing their emissions, the logics of Collective Action Theory are used as the outset of this study. Data was collected through interviews with four individuals from three selected companies who are covered by the EU ETS. The interviews were analysed with a tool that I created based on previous research. The result demonstrates that companies from different sectors highlight different perspectives on how ETS has affected them. However, the case companies seem to accept ETS mainly because they think the system at its core is a good method for promoting a change that all the participants of the study agree is necessary. In order for ETS to be perceived as more legitimate by the companies two factors are essential; increased dialogue between companies and politics and a long-term perspective that takes into account companies’ needs.sv
