The terms L1 and L2 have existed in the linguistic world for a long time. However, in recent decades, the term L3 has also taken place among linguistics, but its meaning is so far controversial. In this study, some existing research about L3 acquisition is presented as well as used to compile the meaning of the term. Furthermore, there is still not a consensus among the linguists about the role of the background languages in L3 acquisition. The aim of this qualitative study is to by using an introspective method discover: (1) how previously acquired languages affect L3 syntax acquisition among swedish students that are learning spanish as a L3, (2) if the students have developed metalinguistic awareness and (3) which factors affects their transfer from previously acquired languages. The results indicate that the students either transfer from their L1 or from both their L1 and L2. There is low metalinguistic awareness among the students and the dominant factor is proficiency level. However, there are limitations in the study that affects the reliability of the results.sv
