Many studies show that, even though political will exists to strengthen the understanding of the neighbouring languages, the level of understanding of the other Scandinavian languages is falling. The Nordic Council of Ministers have identified the formation of teachers as a key factor to increase and develop the tuition on neighbouring languages. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate how the subject Nordic languages is incorporated in the formation of teachers in Denmark and Norway, and to compare the results with a recent study from Sweden. The outcome shows that the three countries have different approaches to how to teach about the Nordic languages, and that universities in Denmark and Norway include both studies in literature and in language science, while the Swedish universities emphazise on language science. Few of the included universities focus on communicative skills, which could have an impact on the students motivation to learn, and in the future, their ability and motivation to teach.sv
