art.description.projectThe curated event had it´s starting point in “What if a 1%-rule for public design” published AIO-journal vol 10: https://artinsideout.se/en/storningar-i-utopin/avdelning/what-if-a-1percent-rule-for-public-design-or-onkar-kular-and-henric-benesch. As a way of presenting the article to audience and to engage with as content Adam James, an artist working with Live-Action-Role-Play (LARP), was invited to craft a LARP-workshop based on the article. The article was conceptualized into a scenario where the participants were to imagine themselves working as civic representative as paid labor within a public design office responding to planning proposals. A group of around 30 participants; consisting of staff members at Rian, other officials from Region Halland and the municipalities of Falkenberg and Halmstad, include represntatives from ArtInsideOut as well invited artists (as part of the ArtInsideOut-program), and staff from HDK-Valand; workshoped their way through 3 scenarios taking on assigned roles. In the following discussion, based on the articles and the experience of the workshop, the need for developing alternative ways of organizing and playing out design and decision-making process which involves the public was discussed. LARP could be one tool for doing that but would require more in-depth and more extensive process. In addition, the stepping in and out of roles was identified as challenging conventions and opening up for alternative interpretations and approaches.en_US
